A tank's specific gravity rating is the density of the heaviest liquid its wall is sized to hold; alum and ferric solutions, brines and most caustic and hypochlorite as delivered are all lighter than a 1.5 wall is sized for, so it carries them with margin without paying for the 1.9 wall that concentrated sulfuric acid needs. The N45 is the certified 1.9 wall, 550 pounds heavier, for ferric at strength and the heavy brines; the N42 is the heavy cross-linked tank at that weight, and the N40 and N46 the lighter cross-linked and linear grades at this tank's weight. The 8210000N40 and 1002100C34 hold 4,650 and 5,000 gallons on a 102 inch base at 154 inches, 48 inches shorter, for a site with a bigger pad and less height.

Openings, sampling and labels

Fill day

The truck's pump outruns the manway vent, so size the vent for the unload rate or give the fill its own top bulkhead and vent line. The fill pipe reaches the floor, so caustic or coagulant enters below the surface instead of free-falling and foaming. Somebody stands at the tank for the whole of the first delivery, watching the slab edge and the outlet fitting as the level rises, and the log takes the date and strength of every load that follows; for hypochlorite the log is also the turnover schedule.

Coagulant, caustic, brine and hypochlorite bulk storage at water and wastewater plants with a berm and a small pad, chemical storage inside tall process buildings, and any regulated liquid of moderate density at plant scale where the certification has to be on file.
