The heavy wall with the big outlet, on a low tank

A 1.9 specific gravity wall is sized for a liquid nearly twice as dense as water, the class ferric chloride at strength and the heavy brines fall in, and the ten foot base does it at 132 inches, where a 102 inch tank of the same volume stands much taller. A 3 inch outlet moves water fast enough for a fire pump or a fill-and-dump operation. Full, it puts 95,076 pounds on a 120 inch circle at the rating: a slab engineered for it and in full contact under the whole floor, and straps on the empty tank against wind and the manway reached from a short platform. The 7000000C34 and C37-BLACK are the general-grade 6,000s in this shell, in white and black. The 7140300N40 is the cross-linked 6,000 for oxidizers, 13 inches taller, and the 7140000C137 holds 6,900 gallons on this base with the 1.5 wall and the same 3 inch outlet. The 8220000C34 is the 6,200 gallon general-grade tank on this base, and the 5250000N40 lays 5,600 gallons down to 102 inches on a 142 inch base.

Bulkheads and lid

• Outlet: 3 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting at the base; a flexible connector between the bulkhead and hard pipe, an expansion joint, and the valve supported off the slab, because a 3 inch valve and pipe weigh more than the fitting should carry.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 132 inches up; filled through a dip tube, vented outside on anything that fumes, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

A 3 inch outlet feeds a fire pump's suction or drains 6,000 gallons by gravity in minutes, so the valve is opened with the receiving line already connected. Fit a sender read at ground level so nobody climbs for a number. On a chemical, choose the sender for the liquid, keep the manway closed against vapor loss, and shade the tank where the chemical is light-sensitive.

The tanker unload

A tanker's pump moves liquid faster than a manway vent can pass air, so either the vent is sized to the unload rate or the fill comes in through its own top bulkhead with a separate vent line. A fill pipe to the floor keeps the liquid from free-falling and foaming. The first delivery into a new tank is watched from start to finish, with the slab edge and the outlet fitting checked as the level climbs, and the log takes the date and strength of every load that follows.

A crane or a forklift with long forks sets 1,450 pounds on the slab. Strap it, fill it to the manway once, hold it, and check the outlet fitting before the first delivery. Write the fill date on the manway with a paint marker; it answers the first question anyone asks about a tank.
