Venting a tower: fill rate, dip tube and 215 inches of headroom

• Vent: the listed opening is an 18 inch threaded, vented manway at the top of a 215 inch shell, and on a tower the vent is the fitting that sets how fast the tank can safely take a delivery. Pipe it outdoors on anything that fumes, keep the run clear, size it to the tanker's pump rather than to the port nearest to hand, and look at it every time the manway is open.
• Fill: land a permanent fill line at the manway so nobody handles a hose eighteen feet up, and carry a dip tube to the floor so the incoming stream does not free-fall the height of the shell, foam, and coat the headspace on the way past.
• Headspace: the band of wall above the liquid line sees vapour rather than liquid and on a black tower cannot be judged from the ground, so it gets a light at every opening and the date goes on the log.
