The Norwesco 1600 Gallon 30 Degree Cone Bottom Tank (N-40817) is a polyethylene cone bottom tank built for full-drain process and chemical-feed service where you cannot leave product sitting in the bottom. At 88 inches in diameter and 84 inches tall on an 88 x 88-inch footprint, this is a 1.5 specific gravity rated tank, meaning Norwesco rates the wall for contents weighing up to 1.5 times the weight of water. That is the single most important number on this page, and it decides which chemicals belong in this tank and which do not.

Will it work for your job?

The 30 degree cone forces liquid and settled solids toward the outlet so the tank empties cleanly between batches, which is why these are used as mix, feed, and storage vessels rather than static water tanks. Plan your install around weight, not just gallons: filled with water this cone bottom tank carries 13,344 lb, and at its full 1.5 SG rating it can hold up to 20,016 lb of contents. The cone bottom design requires a matching stand or structural support to elevate and hold the cone, so confirm your stand rating and pad cover the loaded weight before delivery. Fittings are configured per order, so confirm outlet size and placement before ordering, and review the technical drawing on this page alongside the Tank Sizing Calculator and Tank Sizing Guide to confirm 1600 gallons is the right working volume for your batch cycle.

Chemical compatibility

This tank is rated to 1.5 specific gravity. The resin reads as HDLPE but is unconfirmed, so confirm HDLPE versus XLPE with Norwesco before putting any chemical in it. Match your stored chemical against the OEM chemical-resistance chart at the exact concentration and temperature you run, and pair it with the correct fitting and gasket material.

At the 1.5 SG rating, this tank handles the following per the chart, with the listed fitting and gasket materials: Acetic Acid at 60% (PP/PVC fittings, EPDM gaskets), Aluminum Sulfate at 50% (PVC, EPDM), Calcium Chloride at 40% (PVC, EPDM), Ferrous Sulfate at 20% (PVC, EPDM), Magnesium Chloride at 30% (PVC, EPDM), Sodium Carbonate at 30% (PVC, EPDM), and Ozonated Water up to 10 PPM (PVC, EPDM). For diesel exhaust fluid this tank stores DEF at 32.5% and Urea Solution at 50%, both with EPDM gaskets, but note the 316 stainless fitting callout on DEF: standard hardware contaminates the fluid, so use 316SS wetted parts only.

The mistake to avoid

The most common and most expensive error with a cone bottom chemical tank is overrunning the specific gravity rating. This is a 1.5 SG tank, and a number of common chemicals require a heavier-walled 1.9 SG tank instead. Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) is the classic cone-bottom chem-feed case that trips buyers up: it needs the 1.9 SG wall AND Viton gaskets, not EPDM, because it offgasses and degrades aggressively. Others on the heavier-SG list include Sulfuric Acid (CPVC fittings, Viton gaskets), Hydrochloric Acid (PVC, Viton), Phosphoric Acid (PVC, Viton), Hydrogen Peroxide (PVC, Viton), Peracetic Acid (316SS fittings, Aflas gaskets), Ferric Chloride (PVC, EPDM), Ferric Sulfate (PVC, EPDM), Ethylene Glycol (PVC, EPDM), Propylene Glycol (PP/316SS, EPDM), Polyaluminum Chloride (PVC, EPDM), and Potassium Hydroxide (PVC, EPDM), among others. If your chemical is on that heavier-SG list, this tank is the wrong choice and you need the 1.9 SG version. Verify your specific chemical, concentration, and temperature in the Chemical Compatibility Database before ordering, and never assume a fitting or gasket carries over from one chemical to another.
