The Norwesco 5000 Gallon Vertical Liquid Storage Tank (N-40941) is a natural white polyethylene vertical storage tank standing 141 inches tall on an 86-inch diameter footprint. It is rated to a 1.5 specific gravity, meaning it carries water and heavier liquids at full volume up to that ceiling. That rating, not the gallon number, is the spec most buyers of a 5000 gallon vertical tank overlook until the tank is already on site.

Will it work for your job?

Filled with water this tank holds roughly 41,700 lb of contents, which works out to about 8.34 lb per gallon across 5,000 gallons, exactly the weight of water. That gives you a number you can check yourself, and it lets you trust the loaded figure: at its full 1.5 specific gravity rating the tank is engineered for up to 62,550 lb of liquid weight. Those numbers drive your foundation design more than anything else, so size your pad to the 86-inch diameter and the loaded weight, not the empty shell. Top access comes through a 22-inch lid (the "tuna can" style top fitting) on a revised manway built for that 22-inch lid, giving you a port for fill, inspection, and cleaning. Keep that 22-inch lid in mind when you spec accessories: any fill pipe, vent, screened insert, or gasket you add keys off that opening size, so order them to fit the 22-inch lid rather than guessing. For the rest of the dimensional and fitting layout, see the technical drawing on this page.

Sizing and specific gravity headroom

At 1.0 specific gravity (plain water) this tank runs well inside its 1.5 rating, leaving margin for heavier liquids such as brines and liquid fertilizers up to 1.5 specific gravity, which is the ceiling. Confirm your liquid stays at or below 1.5 before you order; anything heavier than the rating needs a different tank. If you are choosing between this 141" x 86" tank and the shorter 119" x 86" version of the same 5000 gallon tank, note that both share the same 86-inch diameter footprint and the same capacity, so the only real difference is overhead clearance: pick by your ceiling or canopy height, not by floor space. Stepping down to a 2000 or 500 gallon vertical is the other common branch. Run the numbers in our Tank Sizing Calculator and read the Tank Sizing Guide before you commit.

What it costs to ship

This is a large-diameter vertical tank, so it moves by LTL freight, not parcel. It ships from the Norwesco plant in Hanford, California, and we quote freight live to your ZIP. Get an exact number before you buy by running your delivery ZIP through the Freight Cost Estimator, or call 866-418-1777 and we will price it for you.

The mistake to avoid

The most common error on a tank this size is under-building the foundation. A vertical poly tank needs a level, fully supporting pad rated for the loaded weight, up to 62,550 lb at the 1.5 specific gravity rating, with the full 86-inch (about 7.17 ft) diameter bearing evenly. Spread across that circular footprint, the loaded tank averages on the order of 1,550 lb per square foot, so spec a pad or ring base for that bearing pressure rather than eyeballing it. A partial or out-of-level base concentrates stress on the sidewall and shortens tank life.
