A 1025 gallon black leg tank, long and low, for a flatbed or a nurse trailer

The Norwesco 1025 gallon black horizontal leg tank, part number 40603, is a polyethylene transport and storage tank 139 inches long, 49 inches wide and 54 inches tall, weighing 309 lb empty. It is the long, low shape in Norwesco's leg tank line: the same 49 inch width and 54 inch height as the shorter leg tanks in the line, stretched to carry the volume along a flatbed or a trailer deck without raising the load. It comes with a 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting as the outlet and a 16 inch threaded vented manway on top. Norwesco rates it for liquids up to 1.5 specific gravity, which covers water, most liquid fertilizers and many common chemicals; 1025 gallons of water weighs 8550 lb. The resin is FDA compliant per Norwesco, Norwesco lists the tank as NSF 61, the service limit is 120 F, and Norwesco backs it with a 3 year warranty. Norwesco calls for four support bands, part N-60057, when the tank rides on a vehicle.

On a flatbed, a trailer or the ground

At 139 inches the tank takes most of a flatbed or a tandem axle trailer, and the long footprint spreads the load along the deck instead of concentrating it over one axle. Full of water it weighs over four tons before the trailer, so the axle and hitch ratings, not the tank, decide what tows it. A tank this long flexes on a moving deck, which is why Norwesco specifies four bands, N-60057, through the moulded leg recesses: two are not enough, and straps over the manway are never right. The add-ons box on this page lists the bands; put them on the same order. On the ground, it needs a flat, continuous surface under every leg, because a tank this long on a dip carries its weight on the legs at each end. Our guide to Norwesco applicator and leg tanks for fertilizer and the DOT non-roadable trailer rules covers how these tanks are classified on the road, and the farm fleet DOT classification guide covers the agricultural exemption.

What goes in it

Water, liquid fertilizer and the common farm and treatment chemicals that polyethylene handles are the normal loads. Check anything beyond those against the material before the first fill, and ask us about anything that is not a routine case. Liquids heavier than 1.5 times water need the heavy duty version of this tank. If you blend fertilizer in it, our note on fertilizer blend stratification and how to catch it before the spreader runs off spec matters more in a long tank, where the ends and the middle can sit at different strengths. For the volume itself, use the tank sizing calculator and tank sizing guide.

Openings and fittings

  1. Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the end wall. Your valve, camlock or hose adapter threads straight into it. Support the valve and the first length of hose so the fitting carries liquid, not hardware.
  2. Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top: wide enough to fill from a hose or a pump, to drop a float in, and to get a hand and a brush inside to clean. The vent lets air in as you draw down; do not seal it.
  3. Bands. Four, part N-60057. Order them with the tank; a band fitted after the tank is on the deck is a band fitted with the tank in the way.
  4. Drawing. Norwesco's drawing for this tank, linked under Technical Drawing on this page, shows the exact outlet and manway positions and the leg layout for band placement.

Shipping and receiving

The tank ships LTL at freight class 300 from the nearest of Norwesco's plants, 139 by 49 by 54 inches and 309 lb; this size is made in nine of them, from Washougal, Washington, to Owego, New York, so the lane is usually short. It needs a forklift or a liftgate and room to swing a tank nearly twelve feet long. The listed price is before freight; the freight cost estimator gives the lane cost to your ZIP. Bands ordered with the tank travel with it. At the tailgate, check the part number against 40603 on the bill of lading, look at every leg along the full length for transit damage, and fill it with water the first time before it carries anything else.
