Where it goes

At 60 inches across the tank takes a five foot circle of floor, and at 114 inches tall it puts the manway nine and a half feet up. That is the shape for a well house or pump shed with a tall roof, a rainwater tank beside a barn, a backup water supply behind a house, or one of several tanks in a row on one pad. Plan a step or a short ladder for the manway. The pad must be flat, level and continuous under the whole bottom: a poured slab, an existing slab, or compacted gravel with a sand cap. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the sidewall. A 2 inch ball valve, camlock or hose adapter threads straight in. Dry-fit the valve so it faces the pipe run, then tighten, and support the first length of pipe so the fitting carries liquid rather than hardware.
2. Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top. It takes a fill hose, a float switch and a cleaning brush, and the vent lets the tank breathe as the level rises and falls. Never plumb it shut.
3. Liquid and temperature. Keep the contents at or below 1.5 specific gravity and at or below 120 F. A full tank of a liquid at the rating limit weighs about 15640 lb, so size the pad for that, not for water. Heavier liquids belong in the heavy duty version below.
