This one puts the volume into 44 inches of length by taking 32 inches of width, which is the buy when the mount is short and the width is free: across a pickup bed behind the cab, on a short skid, in a bay where 49 inches will not fit. The SII-1120000N45 goes the other way at 49 by 30 inches and 46 pounds, narrow enough to drop between trailer rails or rack uprights, and it is the lighter of the two on the sheet. Both stand 35 inches tall. Below them, the SII-1031500N45 shares this tank's 44 by 32 inch plan and drops to 20 inches tall for 65 gallons at 38 pounds, which is the one to buy when the tank has to fit under a lid, a seat or a canopy. Above them, the SII-1003900N45 is 225 gallons in 52 by 38 by 42 inches at 85 pounds, still a two-person tank empty and a serious load full. The reason to pick this tank out of the four is the short, wide plan with a full 125 gallons in it and the largest footprint per gallon of the pair, which is the most stable of these to strap on a bed that moves.

A 6 inch lid and a 1.25 inch outlet

• Fill opening: a 6 inch lid on top, as the sheet gives it. Six inches is a fill hose and a look inside, not an arm's-length reach, so keep the thread and the gasket clean; on a tank that gets thrown around a farm, the lid is the first thing to leak and the easiest thing to look after.

On a small tank the plumbing does the damage, because everything is within reach and everything gets pulled on. Put a flexible connection at the outlet, carry the pump, the valve and the hose reel on the mount rather than on the tank, and leave enough slack that somebody dragging a wand across a yard is pulling on the bracket and not on the fitting. Keep the valve out of the line of fire: on a pickup bed, that means inboard of the tailgate and above the bed floor rather than hanging where a tie-down or a boot will find it. Look through the lid with a light at each refill, and rinse the tank out when the liquid changes, since a 125 gallon tank does more different jobs in a year than a bulk tank does in a decade. In cold weather, drain the outlet and the hose rather than trusting them to survive; the body takes ice on the surface, a small plastic valve does not.

Spot spraying, hauled water and small-batch mix
