The duty: heavy liquid in a room framed for drums

The room came first and the tank has to live in it. A plating shop, a wash bay, a truck shop, a finishing line or a small treatment building was framed years ago for drums and totes: a header beam at head height, a roll-up door, a floor slab poured for forklifts. Somebody now wants 1,500 gallons of a liquid heavier than water in there, and at 72 inches tall this tank goes under the beam and through the door where a taller vessel does not. The delivery suits the room as well. A dense liquid arrives as a part load and gets transferred in through a hose at a fill point a person reaches from the floor, and the manway opens off a step ladder rather than a platform, so nobody needs a permit to look in it. What the shape costs is floor: an 86 inch circle wants a pad wider than 86 inches, level and in full contact, because a rotationally molded base bears on everything it touches and nothing else, and full at the rating there are 23,769 pounds on that circle. On an interior slab that is the number to hand the structural engineer before anything is set, and the framework for it is the concrete pad sizing guide rather than a rule of thumb. Squat tanks are the ones nobody straps, and at 270 pounds empty this one slides on a wet floor and walks on an outdoor pad, so band or anchor it while it is light and keep it inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. The 1,500 shell, and the 1,300 and 1,550

Take this one over its shellmates when the liquid is dense and the room is short, which is the only combination that needs both the 1.9 rating and 72 inches of height. The sheet gives it as an 8120100 part at 270 pounds where every 1770000 tank in the same 86 by 72 inch shell is given at 260, and we print what the sheet says rather than explain it. The 1770000C34 is the black tank in the other wall, the N48 the black cross-linked one and the N42 the natural cross-linked one, each rated as its own sheet says, and crosslinking answers a chemistry question rather than a density one. If the floor is narrower than 86 inches, the 1830400N40 puts 1,300 gallons on a 72 inch base at 87 inches; if there is height and no floor at all, the 1840000C26 stands 1,550 gallons on a 64 inch base at 124 inches in white, where the level reads through the wall. Little head, so the pump lives below the outlet

• Pump: 72 inches of tank is six feet of liquid at best, and six feet of a liquid rated toward 1.9 is not much suction head, so the pump goes below the outlet where gravity floods it and the suction line stays short, straight and full bore. A self-priming pump asked to lift a dense liquid out of a tank this short will prime full and lose it at half. Fit a low level float or a run-dry cut-out; on a low tank the float is what stands between a shift change and a ruined seal.
• Outlet: the sheet lists the outlet as 1 Manway / Lid. No bottom fitting diameter, material, thread or gasket appears anywhere on it, so specify the draw-off at order against your liquid and the pipe you are tying into. We print no size the sheet does not carry.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the top head at 72 inches, opened from a step ladder; a dip tube to the floor for the fill so a dense load does not aerate, and the vent run outdoors on anything that fumes and sized to the delivery pump.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

In a room this tight, the pipe run is the thing that breaks the tank. Use a flexible connector between the tank and hard pipe, carry the first valve on its own support off the pad, and never let a forklift or a hose reel take a purchase on the wall, because at 270 pounds empty the tank moves before the pipe does. Keep a spare gasket on the shelf. Keep the manway closed between transfers so vapor stays in the tank and shop dust stays out, name the one liquid on the wall, and put a light on the band of wall above the liquid line whenever the lid comes off. In a heated shop a dense liquid sits near the top of its service range more often than people expect, so read the temperature at the wall rather than assuming it.

Wash bays and finishing rooms under a low header

A concentrated bath or stripper in a finishing line, a heavy wash chemical in a truck shop, a dense reagent at a small treatment building, a process liquid at a food plant with a low ceiling: 1,500 gallons at the 1.9 rating is the combination, and the shape is what gets it through the door. A 270 pound tank out of Marked Tree

The 8120100N51 is molded at Marked Tree, Arkansas and moves as freight at class 400 as the sheet lists it. At 86 inches across and 72 inches tall it rides inside a trailer, and 270 pounds is the lightest tank in this batch to receive: a forklift with the forks under the pallet sets it, no crane and no rigging plan, which is why a shop with no yard crew can take one in on a Tuesday. Water test before product: fill to the manway, hold it a shift, read the base, the pad edge and whatever fitting was specified at order, then drain and dry. Measure the roll-up door and the beam clearance before the truck arrives, because 72 inches of tank on a pallet is taller than 72 inches.
