The duty: bulk treatment chemistry at a plant that doses every day

This is the tank for a liquid that is heavier than water but not by much, and for a plant that wants 2,500 gallons of it on hand: a water or wastewater operation feeding a coagulant or a hypochlorite day in and day out, a food plant with a cleaning solution, a grower with a liquid fertilizer that runs through a season. The delivery is the thing to design around. A tanker arrives, the driver wants a hose connection he can reach and a place to stand, and most of 2,500 gallons goes in while somebody watches the level, which is why a fill line to the manway and a gauge readable from the ground are worth more than any accessory on the tank. Against the heavier wall in this same 96 inch shell, this is the tank when the load stays inside 1.5 and there is no reason to pay for rating you will never use; it is also the lighter casting at 510 pounds, which the sheet gives and which matters on the day it is set. Against the 5090000 walls, the trade is shape, not volume: those hold the same 2,500 gallons at 107 inches on a 90 inch circle, taller and narrower, each rated as its own sheet says, so they win where floor space is short and lose where the eave is low. The 5050000C26 is the step down, 2,000 gallons at 88 inches and 340 pounds. The 8390000C26 is the step up, 2,650 gallons at 97 inches on a 102 inch circle at the same 510 pounds this tank weighs, and it needs a wider pad to get there.

The pump, the prime, and the last inches above the floor

• Pump: set the transfer pump below the tank base so the 98 inch column primes it by gravity and it stays flooded down to the last inches of a 2,500 gallon load. Above the base, a self-priming pump will chatter and lose prime near the bottom, and a dry run is a seal replacement. A low-level float or probe wired to stop the pump is cheaper than the seal, and the first isolation valve gets its own support off the pad.
• Outlet: the sheet's outlet entry reads "1 Manway / Lid": no plumbed connection is listed. Tell us the liquid and the pump duty at order and the bulkhead fitting, gasket and bolting are quoted with the tank, with a flexible connector into hard pipe so movement and vibration never reach the wall.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 98 inches up, so a platform with a rail for whoever opens it; a dip tube to the floor for the fill; a vent run outdoors on anything that fumes and sized to the truck pump, not to the tank.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

Day to day the discipline is short: lid closed between deliveries, one liquid named on the wall in paint, a light on the headspace band at every opening, and freeze protection on the valve and the first pipe run rather than on 2,500 gallons of body that will ice from the top down without harm.

Unload with straps under the body, never a strap through the manway, and keep the pallet if the tank might ever move again. Fill it with water to the manway, hold it long enough to walk the pad edge and the base twice, then drain and dry before the chemical goes in.
