A tanker of acid on one slab

Concentrated sulfuric acid weighs nearly twice what water does and attacks the wall of an ordinary linear polyethylene tank from the inside, at the surface and in the vapor space above the liquid. Snyder's N30 resin is compounded for that service, so a tank in it is sized for the acid's weight and its chemistry together, and the higher service limit covers the heat acid makes when it meets moisture. A single wall tank of acid stands inside a berm sized to it, with the eyewash and the shower within reach of the unloading point. Fittings and access

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 154 inches up; fill through a dip tube, vent to a scrubber or outdoors, never into a room, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
• Outlet: specify an acid-rated bulkhead fitting and gasket when ordering; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.
• Listing: ASTM certification.

Choose a level sender rated for concentrated acid and read it at ground level so nobody climbs for a number. Acid draws water from the air and heats when it does, so the manway stays closed and the vent carries a drying trap. Never add water to the tank; dilution is done elsewhere, water first.

The first delivery

The driver's pump can deliver faster than the manway vent can breathe, so the vent is sized for the unload rate or the fill goes through a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent line. The fill pipe runs to the floor so the acid does not free-fall and fume. Nobody walks away during the first fill: the slab edge and the outlet fitting are checked as the level climbs, and the log takes the date and strength of every load that follows.

A forklift with long forks or a small crane sets 1,050 pounds on the slab. Water-fill it once to the manway, hold it, then drain and dry completely before the first acid delivery; water left in an acid tank is the first mistake. Note the pad height and the outlet height on the site plan while the tape is out; the next pipe run will need both.
