Three plants, one 240 pound tank, and the lane it travels

Start with the delivery, because on a leg tank the delivery is the easy part and people still get it wrong. Snyder molds this one at three plants, Chowchilla in California, Lincoln in Nebraska and Philippi in West Virginia, so for most of the country the lane is short and the tank arrives on a deck rather than as a permitted load. At 80 inches long and 54 inches wide it fits inside a trailer instead of hanging over the edge of one, and at 240 pounds empty it comes off with a forklift, a telehandler, a skid loader with forks or four people who have done it before. That is a genuinely different freight problem from a bulk vertical: no crane, no escort, no route survey, just a truck that can reach where you want the tank and a hard enough surface for the machine that unloads it. What happens after the truck leaves is the part worth planning. A horizontal tank carries its load on its legs and its belly, not on a footprint the way an upright does, so the surface under it has to be continuous and flat under every leg, whether that is a trailer deck, a steel skid, a set of timbers or a slab. A leg bearing on a high spot while its neighbour hangs in air is how a molded leg gets loaded the way the mold never intended. The securing hoop is there for the other half of that job: strap over the hoop, not over bare shell, and tension the strapping so the tank cannot walk fore and aft when the liquid does. Buy this one when the mount is short and the height is free. It puts 730 gallons into 80 inches of length by standing 57.5 inches tall on a 54 inch width, which is the shape for a truck bed, a short skid or a corner of a pad where a longer tank would overhang. The SII-1300000C26 is the opposite trade at almost the same volume: 750 gallons stretched to 117 inches, narrowed to 46 and dropped to 48 inches tall, which is the tank for a flatbed or a low trailer where the load has to stay under something and length is not scarce, and it is lighter empty at 210 pounds. • Fill opening: a 10 inch threaded vented lid, which is the only opening the sheet gives on top. Ten inches takes a fill hose and a hand, and the vent in it is what keeps the tank from breathing against itself while liquid goes in or comes out. Fill through it slowly enough that the vent can keep up, and never with the lid cracked open and resting on the thread.
• Outlet: 2 inches, at the bottom, as the sheet lists it. That is the size that empties 730 gallons in a reasonable time by gravity off a mount, and the size a small transfer pump is happy with.
• Sump and drain: the sheet publishes none for this tank, so this page asserts none.

The first joint off that 2 inch outlet is flexible, always. A horizontal tank on a mount moves, and a rigid line bolted from the outlet to a frame member puts every bit of that movement into the fitting; hose or a flexible connector, then hard pipe or a valve that is carried on its own bracket rather than on the tank. Keep the valve where a person can reach it standing beside the tank and where a trailer tongue cannot find it. Because the lid is the only opening, it is also the only inspection port, so look inside with a light every time it is open: the wall above the liquid line is where anything unexpected shows first. Where it freezes, protect the outlet and the first run of pipe rather than the body, and drain the line after use; a plastic valve full of ice is scrap while a tank with ice on the surface is still a tank. Keep a spare gasket for the lid on the shelf and not on an order form.

Nurse duty, fertilizer solution and the roadable question

This is a working farm and yard tank. It is bought for nurse duty beside a sprayer, for a fertilizer solution held where the rig can reach it, for hauled water to a remote pen or a dust-control run, for a wash-down supply on a service truck, and for a mix or transfer tank on a skid. It ships from whichever of the three plants is closest to you, shipping at 80 inches by 54 inches by 58 inches and weighing 240 pounds, as freight class LTL with NMFC 156600-02 on the paperwork. Have the machine and the hands on site the day it lands, because an LTL driver is not there to help you carry a tank. Take it off with forks under the load, set it on the mount rather than on the ground beside the mount, and get the strapping over the hoop before anything goes in it. Then accept it properly: fill it with clean water, let it stand, and read every leg, the mount under it, the lid thread and the 2 inch outlet before the working liquid arrives. Do that with the tank where it will live, not on a level shop floor, because a leg tank tells the truth about its mount only once it is full. Write the fill date and the liquid on the lid with a paint marker the day it goes into service. The vent screen is the cheapest part on the tank and the one that saves it; look at it every time the manway opens.
