The duty: light liquid where the floor is the problem

Nobody buys a shell this tall because they like ladders. They buy it because the pad is a strip, or the bay is boxed in by tanks already anchored, or the plan shows a chemical area the width of a truck and no wider. The duty on this page is ordinary: hypochlorite at a treatment plant, a caustic or sanitizer solution at a food plant, a fertilizer solution inside the 1.5 rating at a co-op, reclaimed or process water that has to stay dark. None of that needs a heavy wall, and the 93,825 pounds this rating allows is far above anything 7,500 gallons of light chemistry will weigh. The delivery is a tanker with a hose run to a manway 234 inches up, so a caged ladder and a real platform are part of the installation and not an afterthought, and the driver stays on the ground. Stability is the price of the shape: a tall shell on a 102 inch circle gets banded or cabled to structure in the upper third, with anchors set in the slab and the bands checked after the first storm and at the end of the first summer, because a black tank in sun grows a little every day. The slab itself carries 62,550 pounds of water on that same small circle, a heavier load per square foot than any wide tank in the range, so it is engineered to the concrete pad sizing guide, dead level and in full contact, inside a berm where the liquid is regulated. Black keeps light out of the liquid and hides the level, so the gauge is a sender read at grade. The 7440000 shell in two ratings

Four part numbers, one body, two ratings, and the scale sorts them: 2,450 pounds is a lighter wall, 3,000 pounds is a heavy-duty one, each rated as its own sheet says. This is the tank to buy when the liquid is inside the 1.5 rating, and the lighter pick is not a small thing on a shell that has to be stood up 234 inches tall by a crane. Buy the 7440000N48 instead only if the liquid is dense enough to require it, and check its paperwork rather than this page's: the heavy wall in this shell is listed at a different freight class. The wide tanks are the other way to hold this much. Both the 5300700N40 and the 5300700C26 sit on a 142 inch circle just 122 inches tall, which wins on a big open pad and loses in an alley.

Priming a pump under a tall, narrow column

• Suction: the sheet lists the outlet as 23. That is a field value and not a pipe size, so nothing is read into it; tell us the liquid, the flow and the pipe material at order and the bulkhead, gasket and bolting get specified to the duty, with a flexible connector to hard pipe and the first valve on its own stand off the pad.
• Prime: set the pump below the outlet elevation and keep the suction run short. A 234 inch column of liquid keeps the suction flooded most of the way down the tank, and a pump that never has to lift is a pump that never loses its prime on a hot afternoon.
• Low level: the same head keeps a pump pulling past the point where there is anything worth pumping, so a low-level cutout that actually stops the pump is not optional. Run the tank down to it once at commissioning and watch what happens.
• Static pressure: the tallest shell in the range puts the most pressure on the outlet fitting and the first valve, which is why nothing rigid is bolted straight from the bulkhead to a fixed pipe run.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway at the top. Fill down a dip tube to the floor, and vent outdoors, sized to the delivery pump, on any liquid that fumes.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

Two flange lines are molded in for side connections, and the eight lifting lugs are rigging points, not pipe supports. On a light chemistry that sits for weeks, a small recirculation loop taken off a tee on the same suction line keeps a diluted solution honest without putting a mixer through the 18 inch top. The rest is housekeeping that pays: manway closed between deliveries, one liquid named in paint on the shell, a light on the band of wall above the liquid line every time the lid comes off, and trace heat or insulation on the valve and the first pipe run where winters freeze, with the body left to ice from the top down.

Where the lighter slim 7,500 goes

Treatment plants squeezing a hypochlorite tank between two that are already installed, food and beverage plants with a wash solution and no floor, co-ops fitting a fertilizer solution behind a warehouse, and industrial sites storing reclaimed water where quality is banded by stage. Lincoln, class 300, and a 2,450 pound lift

This sheet gives Lincoln, Nebraska as the plant and class 300 as the freight class, with the NMFC field blank, so quote it on its own paperwork; the heavy wall in the same shell carries a different class. On the deck it is 102 inches across and 234 inches long, a long permitted load, and the freight cost estimator prices the lane to your ZIP with the listed price read as before freight. At the site it is a crane pick: 2,450 pounds stood upright with slings under the body and the molded lifting lugs used as intended, never a strap through the manway, and the bands to structure fitted before the crane leaves. Commission it on water, filled to the manway and held while someone walks the base and every fitting, then drained and dried before the duty liquid arrives. Order the ladder and the platform in the same purchase order as the tank, because a manway nineteen feet up that nobody can reach safely is a tank nobody inspects.
