Buying the wall the liquid needs

A tank's specific gravity rating is the density of the heaviest liquid its wall is sized to hold for its service life; the coagulants, brines, caustic and hypochlorite a plant buys by the tanker all come in under what a 1.5 wall is sized for, so the wall carries them with margin and the 1.9 wall stays a sulfuric acid purchase. Check the liquid at its concentration in the chemical compatibility database, because weight rating and chemical resistance are separate properties, and work out the usable volume once thermal expansion and the interstice are accounted for with the Captor double wall freeboard sizing guide. Grades on the 102 x 197 inch double wall, and the sizes beside it

The N45 is the 1.9 wall in linear resin and the N30 is the sulfuric acid grade, both 800 pounds heavier; the N40 is cross-linked polyethylene for oxidizers at this tank's weight. The 5610000N43 is the 4,000 gallon double wall in this same grade, 19 inches shorter on the same base, and the 5630000N40 is the 5,000 gallon step up at 216 inches. Access, high-level alarm, interstitial port

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the primary, 197 inches up; fill down a dip tube, run the vent outside on caustic and hypochlorite, and size it for the unload rate.
• Outlet: one penetration through both walls, a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve on its own support; specify the fitting for the chemical when ordering.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

There are two levels to watch: the primary, with a sender chosen for the chemical per the level gauge selection guide, and the interstitial space, monitored with a float or conductivity switch, looked at each shift, and logged each week. When the truck arrives

A tanker's pump moves liquid faster than a manway vent can pass air, so either the vent is sized to the unload rate or the fill comes in through its own top bulkhead with a separate vent line. The fill pipe runs to the floor so coagulant or caustic does not free-fall and foam. The first delivery into a new tank is watched from start to finish, with the slab edge, the outlet fitting and the interstitial port checked as the level climbs, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength.

Inspecting the primary

Polyethylene gives out above the liquid, where vapor and sunlight reach it, so the yearly inspection is done from the platform with the manway open and a light on the top third, looking for crazing and chalk of the primary. The interstitial port is the daily check, and a dry port is the whole point of the second wall. The outlet penetration and the flanged transition are checked at every delivery, because that is where a tank this heavy moves as the level changes.

Applications

Coagulant, caustic, brine and hypochlorite bulk storage at water and wastewater plants that cannot build a berm, chemical storage inside tall process buildings, and any regulated liquid of moderate density at plant scale at a site an inspector visits. Label it for the fire inspector and the workplace inspector at once, keep one chemical in it, and keep the manway closed.

A crane sets 3,000 pounds upright on the slab; a forklift gets it off the truck but cannot stand it up. Prove the primary with water and a dry interstice through the hold; drain and dry before chemical goes in.
