The Norwesco 4035 Gallon Horizontal Elliptical Leg Tank in black is a haul-and-apply workhorse built for moving liquid down the road and across the field. Molded from polyethylene to a 1.5 specific gravity rating, it carries 4035 gallons in an elliptical leg-tank profile that sits low for a stable center of gravity on a trailer or skid. The footprint runs 92.0 x 192.0 inches, with a 75-inch height, 92-inch width, and 192-inch length. That is roughly 16 feet long and nearly 7.7 feet wide, so check it against your trailer deck and any over-width permit thresholds before you buy. The black exterior blocks light to slow algae growth in water and nutrient blends, which is why this size shows up so often as a horizontal leg tank for bulk water, fertilizer, and bulk DEF hauling.

Will it work for your load?

Start with weight, because that is what decides your trailer, axle, and pump sizing. Filled with water, this tank holds roughly 33,652 lb of contents. At its full 1.5 specific gravity rating, it is engineered to carry up to 50,478 lb of contents - the number that matters when you are hauling a heavy fertilizer blend rather than plain water. Run those figures through the Tank Sizing Calculator and the Tank Sizing Guide to confirm your rig and the supporting structure are rated before you fill. The elliptical leg design is purpose-built for horizontal transport - a true horizontal leg tank rather than a vertical tank laid on its side. If you are running a dense nutrient blend, read our guide on fertilizer-blend stratification so you catch a salted-out, stratified load before the spreader runs off spec.

Chemical compatibility

This is a polyethylene tank rated to 1.5 specific gravity. The resin reads as HDLPE in our data but is not yet confirmed - verify HDLPE versus XLPE with us before putting it into chemical service, because crosslinked and linear polyethylene behave differently with aggressive liquids. Within the 1.5 SG rating, this tank suits the following at the listed concentrations, paired with the noted fitting and gasket materials: Acetic Acid (60%, PP/PVC fittings, EPDM gaskets); Aluminum Sulfate (50%, PVC, EPDM); Calcium Chloride (40%, PVC, EPDM); DEF (32.5%, 316SS, EPDM); Ferrous Sulfate (20%, PVC, EPDM); Magnesium Chloride (30%, PVC, EPDM); Sodium Carbonate (30%, PVC, EPDM); Urea Solution (50%, PP/PVC, EPDM); and Ozonated Water (up to 10 PPM, PVC, EPDM). Hauling bulk DEF is a common fit for a tank this size - just note DEF is listed at 32.5% on 316SS fittings with EPDM gaskets, so it needs stainless trim, not the PVC that covers most of the rest of this list. Always confirm against the OEM chemical-resistance chart for your exact concentration and temperature, since both shift compatibility.

Nineteen other chemistries are rated for a 1.9 SG tank, not this 1.5 SG unit - specify the 1.9 SG equivalent or call 866-418-1777 to match the part: Ethylene Glycol, Ferric Chloride, Ferric Sulfate, Hydrochloric Acid, Hydrofluoric Acid, Hydrofluosilicic Acid, Hydrogen Peroxide, Peracetic Acid, Phosphoric Acid, Polyaluminum Chloride, Potassium Carbonate, Potassium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Bisulfate, Sodium Bisulfite, Sodium Hypochlorite, Sodium Thiosulfate, Sulfuric Acid, and Zinc Orthophosphate. Note the gasket and fitting flips on that list: Hydrochloric Acid, Hydrofluoric Acid, Hydrofluosilicic Acid, Hydrogen Peroxide, Phosphoric Acid, and Sodium Hypochlorite call for Viton gaskets, Sulfuric Acid runs CPVC fittings with Viton, and Peracetic Acid needs 316SS with Aflas - none of those are the standard EPDM-with-PVC trim. See the full chemical compatibility reference before you commit to a chemistry.

The mistake to avoid

The error that bites people on a tank this size is sizing the trailer and pump for water weight and then hauling something denser. Plan around the 50,478 lb rated contents figure, not the 33,652 lb water figure, and confirm the gasket and fitting material above match your chemistry - a Viton or 316SS service is not the same as an EPDM-with-PVC one, and ordering the wrong trim is the most common rework on a chemical haul tank. Refer to the technical drawing on this page for fitting locations and overall dimensions, and review our guide to Norwesco applicator and leg tanks for fertilizer along with the DOT classification and agricultural exemption rules if you are running this on a farm fleet trailer.
