Nine feet of tank on a five foot circle, in the heavy grade

The 1830200 shell exists for the plant that has ceiling and no floor, and it is sold in several gradings that are dimensionally identical: 60 inches across, 109 inches tall, 1,200 gallons. This part number is the heavy-duty one. The sheet rates its wall for a specific gravity of 1.9 and 19,015 pounds of maximum contents, at 310 pounds empty, where the lighter-rated tank in the same shell is listed at 300 pounds. Pick between them on the density of the liquid and nothing else, because the footprint, the height and the opening are the same. Height is what you are buying, and height has a cost on a narrow base. All 10,008 pounds of a water fill, and 19,015 at the rating, land on a 60 inch circle, which is a heavier load per square foot than any wide tank at this volume puts down, so the slab is engineered to the concrete pad sizing guide rather than poured by eye, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. A tank that is nearly twice as tall as it is wide also has the highest centre of gravity of anything in this capacity range, so the strapping is designed with the pad and not added afterwards: bands to structure in the upper third, anchors set in the slab, and a check after the first storm and at the end of the first summer, because a black wall in the sun grows a little every day. Measure the route as well as the pad, because a tank this tall goes through a door lying down and stands up on the other side, and the manway at 109 inches needs room above it for a fill line, a vent run and a person. Black passes no light to the liquid and takes the ultraviolet that ages a white shell, and it hides the level, so the gauge is a sender. The 1830200 shell, grade by grade

The four 1830200 part numbers are one tank with four walls; each of them carries the rating its own sheet gives, and this one is the 1.9. Step out of the shell and the shape is the whole argument. The 1830400N40 holds 1,300 gallons in a squatter tank, 72 inches across and 87 tall, for a pad that has width to give and a ceiling that does not clear nine feet. The 1710000C26 is the extreme of that trade: 1,100 gallons laid out on an 86 inch base at 55 inches tall, a tank you look down into from the ground. Buy the 1830200N48 when the aisle is tight, the ceiling is high, and the liquid is dense enough to need the heavy wall.

The vent on a tall, narrow shell

• Vent: the listed 18 inch threaded, vented manway sits 109 inches up, and the vent path from it has to move air out at least as fast as the truck moves liquid in. On a narrow shell the level rises fast for a given pump rate, so the vent has less time to do its work than it would on a wide tank taking the same delivery. Size it to the delivery pump, keep the path clear, and run it outdoors on anything that fumes.
• Fill: through a dip tube to the floor. A free fall of nine feet inside a narrow shell foams a liquid, builds static on the products that carry it, and drums against the wall.
• Headspace: freeboard for thermal expansion at the 140 F / 60 C service limit, taken from the sizing guide. On a tall tank a small volume of expansion is a lot of inches at the top, which is another reason not to gauge by the manway rim.
• Outlet: the sheet lists the outlet as "1 Manway / Lid" with no bottom fitting size, so the draw-off is specified at order against the named liquid.
• Access: anyone opening a manway at 109 inches needs a platform with a rail, not a ladder and a hope.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C. Warranty: 3 year.

Nine feet of liquid standing above a take-off is the best suction head in this capacity range, and it is also the most pressure the bottom fitting and first valve will ever see, so both sit on their own support with a flexible connector between the tank and the hard pipe. A pump below the take-off primes itself; a low-level float stops it before it draws air. Keep the manway closed between deliveries, name the liquid on the wall, and put a light on the headspace band at every opening. Where it freezes, trace or wrap the valve and the first pipe run and let the shell ice from the top down.

Dense chemistry where the floor is short and the ceiling is not

A chemical alley between two existing tanks, a pump room in a basement with height to the joists, a metal finishing line where floor space is the scarcest thing in the building: those are the sites that buy a tall 1,200 instead of a wide one, and the heavy grade is for the dense liquids among them. One plant, one class, a tall load on the deck

The 1830200N48 is listed out of Chowchilla, California at freight class 300. At 60 inches across it takes little deck width, and at 109 inches it still rides inside a standard trailer, so the freight cost estimator prices an ordinary lane to your ZIP, with the listed price before freight. Unload 310 pounds with a strap under the body and stand it up on the pad with the bands ready, because a tall empty tank should not spend a night unsecured. Fill with water to the manway once, hold it, and watch the base and the fitting. Then leave it alone for a day before the pipework goes on; a tank that has settled once stays where it is put. Check the strap tension a week after the first fill; a tank settles a little, and the strap that was tight is loose.
