Twenty-one tons of chemical, low to the ground

A 1.9 specific gravity wall is sized for a liquid nearly twice as dense as water, and 800 pounds of resin is what that takes on this wide, low shell, 290 pounds more than the 1.5 wall in the same mold and the heaviest wall in it by a wide margin. The N43 is the 1.5 wall in this same shell, 290 pounds lighter, for coagulants and brines that never approach this density; the C26 and C37 are the general grades and the C26-BLACK the black one for sun. The 5130000C34 and 5090000C26 stand 3,000 and 2,500 gallons on a 90 inch base at 127 and 107 inches, for a site with height and less floor.

Openings as shipped

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 97 inches up; vent outside on acid and caustic service, fill through a dip tube, and size the vent for the delivery pump.
• Outlet: tell us the chemical when ordering and the bulkhead fitting is matched to it; a flanged transition and a valve supported off the pad, in the material the chemical calls for.
• Service limit: 120 F.

Choose the level sender for the chemical and read it at ground level; keep the manway shut against vapor loss and shade a light-sensitive chemical. Regulated chemical in a single wall tank means a berm sized to the tank around it. Label it so the fire inspector and the workplace inspector read the same thing. Where it freezes, insulate or drain the outlet valve and the first length of pipe.

The first fill from the truck

A delivery truck's pump can push air out faster than a stock vent can pass it, so the vent is sized for the unload rate or the fill goes through a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent line. A fill pipe to the floor keeps caustic or coagulant from free-falling and foaming. A dense liquid heats when water is added to it, so a batch tank is filled with water before the chemical, never after. The first tanker into a new tank is a supervised job, slab edge and outlet fitting checked as it fills, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength.

In service

Ferric and other dense coagulants at a small plant with a berm and a low roof, acid feed for pH control, heavy brine at a softener plant, dense process chemicals delivered by tote truck, and water where the buyer wants the heaviest wall and the lowest center of gravity. One chemical per tank, labeled for both inspectors at once.
