A bleach tank that stays dark

Bulkheads and lid

• Access: 8 inch threaded lid; filled by tote pump through a dip tube, and vented outside, because hypochlorite gives off gas that corrodes everything in a closed room.
• Outlet: specify the bulkhead fitting for hypochlorite when ordering; a flexible transition to the dosing pump suction and a small valve, in PVC or a fluoropolymer, never brass.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

An opaque wall shows a shadow line in daylight, not a number; a float switch for low level protects the dosing pump, and a calibration column on the suction lets the feed rate be checked by eye. Keep the lid closed between fills, keep the tank cool and out of the sun, and label it so the fire inspector and the workplace inspector read the same thing. In a cold climate the outlet valve and the first run of pipe are insulated or drained.

How often it turns over

Size the refill schedule so the tank turns over before the bleach fades, which through a hot summer means buying in smaller lots more often. Log each fill with its date and strength; a tank that is always half full of last month's bleach is dosing water. At changeover, drain through the outlet, rinse through the lid with a wand, drain again, and let it dry before the new fill.
