A 3,000 gallon double wall chemical tank at 1.9 specific gravity

The Snyder 5590000N45 is a double wall chemical storage tank: a 3,000 gallon white high density linear polyethylene primary rated for a specific gravity of 1.9, or 47,538 pounds of contents against 25,020 for water, standing inside its own secondary containment in a shell 102 inches across and 142 inches tall, weighing 1,840 pounds. It is bulk storage for a treatment plant's caustic, ferric, alum or acid with the berm built in, sized for a full tanker compartment, for the plant that cannot pour a basin around an eight and a half foot circle. On the primary, an 18 inch threaded, vented manway, and Snyder's 3 year warranty behind it.

Containment on the footprint

A single wall tank of regulated chemical needs a berm sized to its volume, and at 3,000 gallons that is a concrete basin, a sump, a drain valve that must stay closed, and a rain problem. With the containment inside the outer shell, the 102 inch footprint is the whole footprint and the tank can stand inside an occupied building where a spill must never reach a floor drain; the SPCC 40 CFR 112 compliance walkthrough walks through when a double wall tank stands in for a berm under a spill plan. Below is the resin's rated chemistry; check the liquid at its concentration in the chemical compatibility database, because carrying the weight and resisting the chemical are separate properties of the wall. The 3,000 gallon vertical tank buyers guide compares the single wall tanks at this volume, the right comparison only if a berm is already in place. The tank sizing calculator sizes the tank from feed rate and delivery interval; the tank sizing guide covers the reserve.

Grades on the 102 x 142 inch double wall, and the sizes beside it

The N43 is the 1.5 specific gravity grade, 440 pounds lighter, for coagulants and brines that never approach the density this wall is sized for. The N40 is cross-linked polyethylene for oxidizers at the same weight, and the N30 is the sulfuric acid grade, 60 pounds heavier. The 5580000N30 is the 2,500 gallon double wall, 20 inches shorter on the same base, and the 5600000N30 is the 3,500 gallon step up at 158 inches.

What is fitted, and what is watched

  • Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the primary, 142 inches up; vent outside on caustic and acid service, fill through a dip tube, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
  • Outlet: through both walls together, with a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab; tell us the chemical and the fitting is matched to it.
  • Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

There are two levels to watch: the primary, with a sender chosen for the chemical, and the interstice, which is the alarm: a float or conductivity switch, a look through the port each shift, a logged check each week. Anything in the interstice is a primary leak; the tank is taken out of service that day. Nothing is stacked against the outer shell, nothing is bolted through it, and the space is never used to store anything. Full, the tank loads a 102 inch circle to 47,538 pounds at the rating: an engineered slab bearing under the entire floor, the empty tank strapped down against wind.

Bringing in a load

A tanker unloads faster than the manway can breathe, so the vent is sized for the pump or the fill takes a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent. A fill pipe to the floor keeps caustic or coagulant from free-falling and foaming. Dense liquids heat up when diluted, so a tank topped off with water for a batch is filled water first, chemical second. The first delivery into a new tank is watched from start to finish, with the slab edge, the outlet fitting and the interstitial port checked as the level climbs.

The work it does

Caustic, coagulant and acid bulk storage at water systems that cannot build a berm, chemical storage inside occupied buildings, and any regulated liquid at plant scale at a site an inspector visits. One chemical per tank, labeled for both inspectors at once, manway closed against vapor loss.

Freight, in plain terms

At 102 inches across and 142 inches long on the deck the 5590000N45 is oversize freight (NMFC 156600) on a flatbed at a lane rate; the freight cost estimator prices the lane to your ZIP; the figure listed here is before freight. A forklift with long forks or a small crane sets 1,840 pounds on the slab. Fill the primary with water, hold it, and watch the interstice stay dry; then drain and dry it before the chemical arrives. Save the pallet; a tank that ever has to move again is easier to move on it.
