The Snyder Industries 5000 Gallon Double Wall Liquid Chemical Storage Tank gives you full secondary containment in a single footprint: an inner storage tank nested inside an outer containment shell, both molded in High Density Linear Polyethylene. It stands 216 inches tall on a 102 by 102 inch footprint, holds 5000 gallons, and carries a 1.5 specific gravity rating, which is the number that decides what you can safely put in it. This is a vertical double wall tank built for chemical service where a spill is not an option.

Will it work for your application

The 1.5 specific gravity rating means the inner wall is engineered to hold a liquid weighing up to one and a half times the weight of water. At 5000 gallons, water alone weighs 41,700 lbs full; at the maximum rated 1.5 SG contents you are looking at 62,550 lbs of liquid plus tank. Design your pad and foundation around the heavier number, not the water figure: 62,550 lbs spread across the 102 by 102 inch base (72.25 sq ft) works out to roughly 865 lbs per square foot, which is the load figure to hand your concrete contractor. The tank ships with three top ports per the technical drawing on this page: a flange, an 18-inch PE threaded and vented fitting, and a manway with a 15-inch access opening. The 18-inch threaded/vented port is the natural fill-and-vent connection; the manway with 15-inch access is for inspection and internal equipment. Match those port locations and sizes against your piping and level-gauge plan before you order. If you are still settling on capacity or footprint, run the numbers through our Tank Sizing Calculator, read the Tank Sizing Guide, and compare alternative 5000-gallon geometries in our 119 x 86 and 141 x 86 5000-gallon buyer's guides if a 102 x 102 pad is tight.

Chemical compatibility

This tank is molded in HDLPE and rated to 1.5 specific gravity, and that rating is the gate for chemical service. Compatibility is concentration and temperature specific, so always confirm your exact chemical, strength, and operating temperature against the Snyder OEM chemical-resistance chart before committing. The chemicals below are compatible with a 1.5 SG HDLPE tank at the listed concentrations, with the recommended fitting and gasket materials:

  • Acetic Acid at 60% with PP or PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • Aluminum Sulfate at 50% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • Calcium Chloride at 40% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) at 32.5% with 316 stainless fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • Ferrous Sulfate at 20% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • Magnesium Chloride at 30% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • Sodium Carbonate at 30% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • Urea Solution at 50% with PP or PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
  • Ozonated Water up to 10 PPM with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets

Note that ozonated water at up to 10 PPM is the one oxidizer on this compatible list that runs on EPDM gaskets per the pack; the stronger oxidizers below tell a different story. Several common chemicals are NOT a fit for this 1.5 SG tank and require a higher 1.9 specific gravity build instead: Ethylene Glycol, Ferric Chloride, Ferric Sulfate, Hydrochloric Acid, Hydrofluoric Acid, Hydrofluosilicic Acid, Hydrogen Peroxide, Peracetic Acid, Phosphoric Acid, Polyaluminum Chloride, Potassium Carbonate, Potassium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Bisulfate, Sodium Bisulfite, Sodium Hypochlorite, Sodium Thiosulfate, Sulfuric Acid, and Zinc Orthophosphate. Beyond the higher SG build, several of these also change the gasket and fitting spec: hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, hydrofluosilicic, hydrogen peroxide, phosphoric, and sodium hypochlorite call for Viton rather than EPDM; sulfuric acid is the lone CPVC-fitting entry with Viton; and peracetic acid is the outlier that needs 316 stainless fittings with Aflas gaskets. Call us at 866-418-1777 to spec the correct tank, and check the full chart in our Chemical Compatibility Database.

The mistake to avoid

The single most expensive error on a double wall chemical tank is matching the wrong specific gravity to your liquid. This unit is a 1.5 SG tank. If your chemical needs a 1.9 SG build, as the list above shows for ferric chloride, sodium hypochlorite, and the strong acids, putting it in this tank stresses the wall beyond its design. The second mistake is gasket material: EPDM works for the salts and the milder acids here, but oxidizers like sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide need Viton, and peracetic acid needs Aflas. Confirm both the SG rating and the gasket against the OEM chart before you buy. If you are storing an SPCC-regulated oil or chemical, our Snyder Captor double-wall tanks for SPCC 40 CFR 112 walkthrough covers how the built-in containment supports your plan, and the tank level gauge selection guide helps you pick the right gauge for the manway and threaded port.

This vertical double wall storage tank ships LTL freight from the Snyder plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, given its size and 62,550 lb loaded weight. Freight is quoted live to your ZIP code, so get an exact number with our Freight Cost Estimator or call 866-418-1777 to talk through delivery, offload, and the right fitting and gasket package for your chemical.
