A 5,000 gallon double wall chemical tank, eighteen feet tall

The Snyder 5630000N43 is a double wall chemical storage tank: a 5,000 gallon white high density linear polyethylene primary rated for a specific gravity of 1.5, or 62,550 pounds of contents against 41,700 for water, standing inside its own secondary containment in a shell 102 inches across and 216 inches tall, weighing 3,600 pounds. It is listed to NSF/ANSI 61 for drinking water treatment chemicals, and it is the bulk coagulant, caustic or hypochlorite tank for a water plant that takes a full tanker and cannot pour a berm. An 18 inch threaded, vented manway tops the primary, with a 3 year warranty.

A spill plan in one footprint

Regulated chemical in a single wall tank needs a berm that holds the whole tank, and at 5,000 gallons that is a concrete basin, a sump, a drain valve that must stay closed, and a rain problem. A double wall tank keeps its containment inside the outer shell, so the 102 inch footprint is all the room it needs; the SPCC 40 CFR 112 compliance walkthrough explains which spill-plan cases a double wall tank satisfies by itself. The 1.5 grade is the wall for the liquids between water and the heavy acids; alum and ferric solutions, brines and most caustic and hypochlorite as delivered are all lighter than a 1.5 wall is sized for. The rated chemistry for the resin is listed below; check the liquid at its concentration in the chemical compatibility database. The 5,000 gallon vertical tank buyers guide and the 141 by 86 inch 5,000 gallon guide compare the single wall tanks at this volume, the right comparison only if a berm is already in place. The tank sizing calculator matches the volume to feed rate and delivery interval, and the tank sizing guide covers the reserve.

The N40 is cross-linked polyethylene for oxidizers at this tank's weight, the N46 is another linear grade, and the N42 is the heavy-wall cross-linked tank, 700 pounds more resin. The 5620000N52 is the 4,500 gallon double wall in the 1.9 grade, 19 inches shorter on the same base, and the 5660000N40 lays 5,500 gallons down to 172 inches on a 120 inch base for a lower roof.

Openings, with the alarms that go on them

  • Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the primary, 216 inches up; on caustic or hypochlorite the vent goes outdoors, the fill goes down a dip tube, and the vent is sized to the tanker pump.
  • Outlet: through both walls as one penetration, flanged, with an expansion joint and the valve carried off the slab; order the fitting in the material the chemical calls for.
  • Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.
  • Listing: NSF/ANSI 61.

Two levels to watch: the primary, with a sender chosen for the chemical per the level gauge selection guide, and the space between the walls, which serves as the leak alarm and gets a switch, a shift check at the port, and a weekly log entry. A wet interstice is a failed primary, and the tank is drained the same day. Full, the tank loads a 102 inch circle to 62,550 pounds at the rating: a slab engineered for it and in full contact under the whole floor, and straps on the empty tank against wind, and at 216 inches a fixed platform with a rail, not a ladder, is how anyone reaches the manway.

The first delivery

The driver's pump can deliver faster than the manway vent can breathe, so the vent is sized for the unload rate or the fill goes through a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent line. The fill pipe reaches the floor, so caustic or coagulant enters below the surface instead of free-falling and foaming. Watch the first delivery from the first gallon to the last, with eyes on the slab edge, the outlet fitting and the interstitial port as the tank fills, and the log takes the date and strength of every load that follows.

Jobs it is bought for

Coagulant, caustic, brine and hypochlorite bulk storage at water plants that cannot build a berm, drinking water treatment chemical storage where the NSF listing is required, chemical storage inside tall process buildings, and any regulated liquid of moderate density at plant scale at a site an inspector visits. One chemical to a tank, a label both inspectors can read, and the manway kept closed against vapor loss.

What the carrier needs from you

At 102 inches across and 216 inches long on the deck the 5630000N43 is oversize freight (NMFC 156600) on a flatbed at a lane rate; the freight cost estimator gives the flatbed number for your ZIP, and the listed price is before freight. A crane sets 3,600 pounds upright on the slab; a forklift can unload it but not stand it. Water-test the primary and hold it long enough to prove the interstice stays dry, then drain and dry the tank before the first delivery. Note the pad height and the outlet height on the site plan while the tape is out; the next pipe run will need both.
