550 gallons under four feet in opaque white, ASTM certified

The Snyder 1820000N52 is an opaque white high density linear polyethylene vertical tank, 64 inches across and only 47 inches tall, holding 550 gallons at 100 pounds. Its wall is rated for a specific gravity of 1.9, or 8,715 pounds of contents against 4,587 for water, the chemical-grade wall for ferric chloride at strength, concentrated acids and the heavy brines, it is sold with ASTM certification for jobs that need the paper, and the opaque resin keeps light off the contents the way a black tank does while staying white enough to show a shadow line of the level in daylight. The low shape goes under a bench or a low eave, cannot tip, and puts the 18 inch threaded, vented manway at waist height. It ships as standard LTL freight.

A dark tank that hides under a bench

Light drives the breakdown of hypochlorite, of some coagulants and of most of the organic chemicals a plant stores; a standard white wall lets some of it through, a black wall lets none through and hides the level, and the opaque white is the compromise Snyder molds for chemical service, dark inside and readable outside. At 47 inches the tank disappears under a bench or beside a dosing skid, and 8,715 pounds on a 64 inch circle at the rating sits low enough that no strap is needed; a slab in full contact carries it, per the concrete pad sizing guide. The wall is rated for nearly twice the density of water and certified under ASTM D1998, which is the standard these tanks are specified to; the freeboard sizing guide works out how much of the nominal 550 gallons is usable once thermal expansion is accounted for. The tank sizing calculator sizes the tank to feed rate and delivery interval, and the tank sizing guide covers the reserve.

The 1800000 tanks stand the same 550 gallons on a 48 inch base at 75 inches, 28 inches taller, for a site with height and no floor, the N52 in this same opaque resin and the C26-BLACK in black. The 32669 is the 500 gallon step down on that base, and the 32441 the 750 gallon water tank on it.

Openings and limits

  • Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway at waist height; a dip tube takes the fill from a hose or tote pump; a fuming liquid gets a vent line to the outside.
  • Outlet: order the bulkhead fitting in the material the chemical calls for; a flexible connector between the bulkhead and the pump suction, and the valve supported off the floor.
  • Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.
  • Listing: ASTM certification.

An opaque wall shows a shadow line in daylight, not a number; a float switch for low level protects the dosing pump. A low tank gives the pump a flooded suction to the last few inches. Keep the manway closed against vapor loss, set the tank in a spill tray, and label it so the fire inspector and the workplace inspector read the same thing. In a cold climate the outlet valve and the first run of pipe are insulated or drained.

The usual assignments

Hypochlorite and light-sensitive coagulants under a bench at a small plant that keeps certifications on file, ferric and other dense coagulants where a tall tank will not fit, acid and inhibitor feed at a cooling tower, and, with water in it, a cistern under a deck or one cell of a small fire reserve of the kind the fire-water reservoir design guide describes. Several of them are the storage stage of a small reuse system for roof water and condensate, per the industrial water reuse tank topology article, where the dark wall keeps the stored water clear. One chemical per tank, labeled.

Lane rate, not class rate

The 1820000N52 ships palletized as LTL freight (NMFC 156600-01) at a class rate; the freight cost estimator shows it for your ZIP, and the listed price is before freight. Two people carry 100 pounds, and at 64 inches across it goes through a double door or a gate. Water-fill it once to the manway, hold it, check the outlet fitting, then drain and dry before the chemical goes in, and keep the certification paperwork with the project file. Tape a copy of the spec sheet inside the control panel door; the next person to touch the tank will not have the box it came in.
