Why black, and why the heavy wall

Carbon black is the most effective ultraviolet stabilizer polyethylene has, and it is opaque, so a black tank protects both the wall and the liquid from light. That matters for hypochlorite, for peroxide, for some polymers and for any chemical that loses strength in daylight, and it matters for an outdoor tank in the sun. The heavier wall does the rest: it resists creep under a dense liquid, holds its shape through thermal cycling, and carries a valve and hard pipe at the outlet without oval-ing the fitting. The list below is the resin's rated chemistry; check the liquid at its concentration in the chemical compatibility database, because weight rating and chemical resistance are separate properties. The 48 x 75 inch shell in every version

The N42 is the cross-linked polyethylene version at 110 pounds, the wall for hypochlorite and other oxidizers stored warm; the N52 is another resin option at the same weight. The two water tanks on the same base show how much of this tank's weight is chemical wall: 45 pounds more than the 32669 for 50 more gallons, and 23 pounds more than the 32441, which stacks 750 gallons at 106 inches.

Openings, instruments and labels

• Outlet: 2 inch, at the bottom of the sidewall; a PVC or CPVC adapter, a flexible transition, and a valve supported off the floor.
• Access: 18 inch manway; vent outside on anything that fumes, fill through a dip tube.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

A black wall hides the level, so plan the sender: the level gauge selection guide matches it to the chemical, and a 75 inch range is easy for any of them. Turnover, sun and cold

Five hundred and fifty gallons is two and a half totes, filled on a schedule set by the feed rate; size the schedule so the tank turns over before the chemical degrades, and for hypochlorite that means small lots often. Black absorbs heat, so a tank in full sun warms its contents on a summer afternoon; shade it where the site allows and draw from the outlet at the base. In winter a chemical solution expands against a wall not designed for ice, so house the tank or keep it above freezing, and insulate or drain the outlet valve and the first run of pipe. When the tank changes product, drain, rinse, drain and dry before the new fill.

Applications

Hypochlorite and peroxide storage where light is the enemy, caustic and coagulant at small water and wastewater systems, acid and inhibitor feed at cooling towers, and any outdoor chemical tank at a site an inspector visits. One chemical per tank, labeled, manway closed against vapor loss.
