A full tanker of acid, with room to receive the next one

Concentrated sulfuric acid weighs nearly twice what water does and attacks the wall of an ordinary linear polyethylene tank from the inside, at the surface and in the vapor space above the liquid; Snyder's N30 resin is compounded for that service, so the tank is sized for the acid's weight and its chemistry together. Six thousand gallons takes a tanker and leaves a working reserve, which is what a plant that cannot run out wants. The N39, N33 and C137 are the same shell in lighter walls for liquids that do not attack linear polyethylene, the N39 certified at 1.35 and the N33 the black tank. Connections

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 188 inches up; fill through a dip tube, vent to a scrubber or outdoors, never into a room, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
• Outlet: specify an acid-rated bulkhead fitting and gasket when ordering; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Choose a level sender rated for concentrated acid and read it at ground level so nobody climbs for a number. Acid draws water from the air and heats when it does, so the manway stays closed and the vent carries a drying trap. Never add water to the tank; dilution is done elsewhere, water first.

Delivery day at the manway

Unloading a tanker pushes air out faster than a stock manway vent can pass it; size the vent for that rate, or fill through a dedicated top bulkhead vented separately. The fill pipe runs to the floor so the acid does not free-fall and fume; on a shell this tall that is a long drop. Nobody walks away during the first fill: the slab edge and the outlet fitting are checked as the level climbs, and every delivery after that goes in the log with a date and a strength.

What it holds in practice

Getting it to the pad

A crane sets 1,800 pounds upright on the slab; unloading is a forklift job, standing it is not. Water-fill it once to the manway, hold it, then drain and dry completely before the first acid delivery; water left in an acid tank is the first mistake. Once it is full and holding, leave it alone for a day before the plumbing goes on; a settled tank is a quiet one.
