Why the lighter rating is usually the right buy

Four part numbers share this 120 by 177 inch shell and, unusually, all four are listed at the same 2,700 pounds empty: this molding, the 7370000N42, the 7370000N46 and the 7370000N49. The sheets give the same weight for each and we print what they say. So the family decision here is purely the rating on the wall, and this page carries 1.5, which the sheet reads as 98,829 pounds of allowed contents. Inside the mold nothing changes but the rating, so the four top rows are one tank sold at four specifications and this one is the ordinary-duty entry. Outside the mold the trade is the usual one between floor and ceiling. The 5300600N40 holds a little more in a taller shell on the same circle, listed lighter empty than anything in this mold, and it is the buy when the roof is generous. The 5300700C26 is the answer for a building with no height at all, spreading 7,650 gallons across a 142 inch circle just 122 inches tall, which takes a far larger slab and returns a manway you reach from a step. The vent is the part that saves the tank

• Vent: the listed opening is an 18 inch threaded, vented manway, and the vent gets sized to the pump on the delivery truck. This is the fitting that quietly decides how long a tank lasts. Air leaves at the rate liquid arrives and comes back at the rate it is drawn off, and a vent that cannot pass it either puts pressure into a shell built for atmosphere or pulls a vacuum in it. Screen it, and look at the screen every time the manway is open.
• Fill: a dip tube to the floor. • Outlet: the sheet gives the outlet as one manway and lid and lists no bottom fitting of any kind, in any size, material or thread, anywhere on it. • Access and hardware as listed: ladder lugs and two flange lines, and a permanent platform with a rail and a gate for an opening 177 inches off the ground, with the fill connection landed at the manway rather than carried up by hand.

Because the sheet names no bottom connection, the draw-off is specified deliberately against the liquid, the flow rate and the pump already on site, and only then does anything get drilled. Once it is there, the first valve rides on its own support off the pad with a flexible element between the tank and the hard pipe, and nothing rigid bolts to the shell, which is not a pipe anchor and never was. Put the transfer pump below the connection so gravity keeps it flooded, fit a low-level float so it stops before it draws air, keep the manway threaded shut between deliveries, keep one liquid to one tank with its name on the wall, and where the site freezes, trace and insulate the base piping and the first valve rather than the body, which takes ice from the top down without harm.

Feed and treatment solutions between tanker deliveries

A water or wastewater plant that takes hypochlorite by the tanker and draws it down over a fortnight, a co-op storing a feed or fertilizer solution through a season, a manufacturer with a rinse or dilution liquid that used to come in totes, a process line that needs bulk makeup water within pipe reach.
