An 8,700 gallon double wall chemical tank on a twelve foot base

The Snyder 1006400N43 is a double wall chemical storage tank: an 8,700 gallon white high density linear polyethylene primary rated for a specific gravity of 1.5, or 108,837 pounds of contents against 72,558 for water, standing inside its own secondary containment in a shell 142 inches across and 197 inches tall, weighing 5,000 pounds. It takes a full tanker with a large reserve left in, with the berm built in; the 1.5 grade is the wall for coagulants, brines, caustic and hypochlorite as delivered. On the primary, an 18 inch threaded, vented manway, and Snyder's 3 year warranty behind it.

Want it on your site? Get LTL freight to your ZIP, add it to your cart above, or call 866-418-1777 and a tank specialist will confirm the fit.

Containment at the scale of a plant

Put a regulated chemical in a single wall tank and the berm has to hold all of it, and at 8,700 gallons that is a concrete basin the size of a room, a sump, a drain valve that must stay closed, and a rain problem every storm. A double wall tank carries its containment inside the outer shell, so the 142 inch footprint is the whole footprint; the SPCC 40 CFR 112 compliance walkthrough walks through when a double wall tank stands in for a berm under a spill plan. A tank's specific gravity rating is the density of the heaviest liquid its wall is sized to hold; a 1.5 wall covers alum, ferric, brine, caustic and hypochlorite as delivered with room to spare; the 1.9 wall is for concentrated sulfuric acid and nothing lighter needs it. Below is the resin's rated chemistry; check the liquid at its concentration in the chemical compatibility database, and work out the usable volume with the Captor double wall freeboard sizing guide. The tank sizing calculator sizes the tank from feed rate and delivery interval; the tank sizing guide covers the reserve.

The N40 is cross-linked polyethylene for oxidizers at this tank's weight, the N46 is another linear grade, and the N48 is the heavy-wall tank, 800 pounds more resin. The 5670000N43 is the 6,500 gallon double wall in this same grade on a 120 inch base at nearly this height, and the 1006600N30 is the 10,000 gallon sulfuric-grade step up on this same base, 29 inches taller.

Where the pipe goes, and the two alarms

  • Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the primary, 197 inches up; vent outside on caustic and hypochlorite service, fill through a dip tube, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
  • Outlet: through both walls together, with a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab; tell us the chemical and the fitting is matched to it.
  • Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Two levels need watching: the primary, with a sender chosen for the chemical per the level gauge selection guide, and the interstice, which is the alarm: a float or conductivity switch, a look through the port each shift, a logged check each week. Overfills happen on delivery day, at the tanker; the tank spillover redundancy guide sets out the high-level alarm and the automatic cutoff that end a fill before the second wall is ever tested. Full, the tank loads a 142 inch circle to 108,837 pounds at the rating: an engineered, full-contact slab under all of the floor, with straps holding the empty tank against wind, and at 197 inches the manway is reached from a fixed platform with a rail, never a ladder.

Taking a tanker load

A tanker unloads faster than the manway can breathe, so the vent is sized for the pump or the fill takes a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent. Run the fill pipe to the floor so coagulant or caustic does not free-fall and foam. Somebody stands at the tank for the whole of the first delivery, checking the slab edge, the outlet fitting and the interstitial port as the level rises, and every delivery after that goes in the log with a date and a strength; at this size the delivery log doubles as the inventory.

Who buys this tank

Coagulant, caustic, brine and hypochlorite bulk storage at large water and wastewater plants that cannot build a berm, chemical storage inside tall process buildings, and any regulated liquid of moderate density at plant scale at a site an inspector visits. One chemical per tank, labeled for both inspectors at once, manway closed against vapor loss.

Chemical service ratings

The resin is rated for the liquids below at the concentrations shown; the fitting and gasket called out are the ones to order with the tank. Verify the exact service on the linked page or in the chemical compatibility database before ordering.

Delivery day

At 142 inches across and 197 inches long on the deck the 1006400N43 is oversize freight (NMFC 156600) on a flatbed at a lane rate, with an escort on most routes; the freight cost estimator prices the lane to your ZIP; the figure listed here is before freight. A crane sets 5,000 pounds upright on the slab. Fill the primary with water, hold it, and watch the interstice stay dry; then drain and dry it before the chemical arrives. Keep the delivery paperwork with the tank; the serial number on the shell is what a warranty claim starts from.
