8,700 gallons, double wall, cross-linked polyethylene, NSF 61
The Snyder 1006400N40 is the cross-linked polyethylene version of Snyder's 8,700 gallon double wall tank: a 142 inch by 197 inch shell, 5,000 pounds, with a primary rated for a specific gravity of 1.5, or 108,837 pounds of contents against 72,558 for water, standing inside its own secondary containment. Cross-linked resin is the wall for hypochlorite and the other oxidizers, and this tank is listed to NSF/ANSI 61, so it is the bulk hypochlorite tank for a large drinking water plant, with the berm built in. An 18 inch threaded, vented manway tops the primary, with a 3 year warranty.

Hypochlorite at plant scale, contained and listed
Linear polyethylene softens with heat and creeps under sustained load; cross-linked polyethylene is molded with a catalyst that ties the polymer chains into one network, so it holds its shape under a dense liquid, resists the stress cracking oxidizers cause, and tolerates heat. The trade is that it cannot be plastic-welded, so fittings are bulkhead or bolted and any added port is decided before the tank is filled. The double wall carries its containment inside the outer shell, so the 142 inch footprint is the whole footprint; the SPCC 40 CFR 112 compliance walkthrough explains which spill-plan cases a double wall tank satisfies by itself. The rated chemistry for the resin is listed below; check the liquid at its concentration in the chemical compatibility database, and work out the usable volume with the Captor double wall freeboard sizing guide. The tank sizing calculator matches the volume to feed rate and delivery interval, and the tank sizing guide covers the reserve; hypochlorite in particular is sized for short turnover, because it loses strength with every warm week in the tank.
Grades on the 142 x 197 inch double wall, and the sizes beside it
| Part | Gallons | Diameter x height | Empty weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1006400N40 (this tank, XLPE, NSF 61) | 8,700 | 142 x 197 in | 5,000 lb |
| 1006400N43 (HDLPE, 1.5 SG) | 8,700 | 142 x 197 in | 5,000 lb |
| 1006400N49 | 8,700 | 142 x 197 in | 5,000 lb |
| 1006400N48 (heavy wall) | 8,700 | 142 x 197 in | 5,800 lb |
| 5670000N43 (1.5 SG) | 6,500 | 120 x 199 in | 4,000 lb |
| 1006600N30 (sulfuric grade) | 10,000 | 142 x 226 in | 7,400 lb |
The N43 is the linear-resin twin at the same weight for coagulants and brines that do not attack a linear wall, and the N49 is another linear grade; the N48 is the heavy-wall tank, 800 pounds more resin. The 5670000N43 is the 6,500 gallon double wall on a 120 inch base at nearly this height, and the 1006600N30 is the 10,000 gallon sulfuric-grade step up on this same base, 29 inches taller.

Openings, alarms and the interstice
- Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the primary, 197 inches up; vent outside on hypochlorite, fill through a dip tube, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
- Outlet: through both walls as one penetration, flanged, with an expansion joint and the valve carried off the slab; specify the fitting for the chemical when ordering, and decide any added port before the tank is filled, because XLPE cannot be welded.
- Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.
- Listing: NSF/ANSI 61.
Watch two levels: the primary, with a sender chosen for hypochlorite per the level gauge selection guide, since it is hard on wetted parts, and the space between the walls, which serves as the leak alarm and gets a switch, a shift check at the port, and a weekly log entry. The tanker connection is where an overfill starts; the tank spillover redundancy guide walks through the alarm and cutoff layers that stop an overfill upstream of the interstice. Full, the tank loads a 142 inch circle to 108,837 pounds at the rating: an engineered slab in full contact under the whole floor, with the empty tank strapped against wind, the manway reached from a fixed platform with a rail, and the tank shaded where the site allows.
Receiving a tanker
The driver's pump can deliver faster than the manway vent can breathe, so the vent is sized for the unload rate or the fill goes through a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent line. The fill pipe reaches the floor, so the liquid enters below the surface instead of free-falling and foaming. The first fill of a new tank is watched end to end: slab edge, outlet fitting and interstitial port, checked as the level comes up; after that, a dated log of each delivery and its strength is what turns a guess about turnover into a schedule.
Typical duty
Hypochlorite bulk storage at large drinking water plants where the NSF listing is required and no berm exists, oxidizer storage inside tall process buildings, and any regulated oxidizer at plant scale at a site an inspector visits. One chemical to a tank, a label both inspectors can read, and the manway kept closed against vapor loss.

Freight to your ZIP
At 142 inches across and 197 inches long on the deck the 1006400N40 is oversize freight (NMFC 156600) on a flatbed at a lane rate, with an escort on most routes; the freight cost estimator gives the flatbed number for your ZIP, and the listed price is before freight. A crane sets 5,000 pounds upright on the slab. Water-test the primary and hold it long enough to prove the interstice stays dry, then drain and dry the tank before the first delivery. A photo of the tank on its pad, full, on day one is worth keeping; it is the baseline every later inspection is compared against.
