A 6,500 gallon double wall chemical tank at 1.9 specific gravity, ASTM certified

The Snyder 5670000N52 is a double wall chemical storage tank: a 6,500 gallon opaque white high density linear polyethylene primary rated for a specific gravity of 1.9, or 102,999 pounds of contents against 54,210 for water, standing inside its own secondary containment in a shell 120 inches across and 199 inches tall, weighing 5,300 pounds. It is sold with ASTM certification, it takes a full tanker and holds a reserve on top of it, and it is the full-density wall, for ferric chloride at strength, concentrated acids and the heavy brines, with the berm built in. On the primary, an 18 inch threaded, vented manway, and Snyder's 3 year warranty behind it.

A tanker and a reserve, contained

A tanker compartment is well under this volume, and a tank sized only to a compartment is empty on delivery day, which is the day something goes wrong; 6,500 gallons takes the load with a reserve still in the bottom. A 1.9 specific gravity wall is sized for a liquid nearly twice as dense as water, and at this volume that is 5,300 pounds of resin in the primary and the outer shell together, the certification against ASTM D1998 saying the wall was sized that way. A single wall tank of that chemical needs a berm sized to its volume; a double wall tank carries its containment inside the outer shell, so the 120 inch footprint is the whole footprint, and the SPCC 40 CFR 112 compliance walkthrough covers where that satisfies a spill plan on its own. Below is the resin's rated chemistry; check the liquid at its concentration in the chemical compatibility database, because carrying the weight and resisting the chemical are separate properties of the wall. The tank sizing calculator sizes the tank from feed rate and delivery interval; the tank sizing guide covers the reserve.

The N30 is the sulfuric acid grade and the N42 is cross-linked polyethylene for oxidizers, both at this tank's weight. The N43 is the 1.5 wall and the N40 the lighter cross-linked wall, both 1,300 pounds lighter, for liquids that never approach this density. The 5660000N40 is the 5,500 gallon double wall on this base, 27 inches shorter, and the 1006400N46 holds 8,700 gallons on a 142 inch base at nearly this height.

Fittings, and watching the interstice

  • Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the primary, 199 inches up; vent outside on acid and caustic service, fill through a dip tube, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
  • Outlet: through both walls together, with a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab; tell us the chemical and the fitting is matched to it.
  • Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.
  • Listing: ASTM certification.

Two levels to watch: the primary, with a sender chosen for the chemical per the level gauge selection guide, and the interstice, which is the alarm: a float or conductivity switch, a look through the port each shift, a logged check each week. Anything in the interstice is a primary leak; the tank is taken out of service that day. Nothing is stacked against the outer shell, nothing is bolted through it, and the space is never used to store anything. Full, the tank loads a 120 inch circle to 102,999 pounds at the rating: a slab engineered for it and in full contact under the whole floor, and straps on the empty tank against wind, and at 199 inches a fixed platform with a rail, not a ladder, is how anyone reaches the manway.

Taking a tanker load

A tanker unloads faster than the manway can breathe, so the vent is sized for the pump or the fill takes a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent. The fill pipe reaches the floor, so caustic or coagulant enters below the surface instead of free-falling and foaming. If the tank is ever used to dilute a batch, water goes in first and the chemical second; the other order boils. Watch the first delivery from the first gallon to the last, with eyes on the slab edge, the outlet fitting and the interstitial port as the tank fills, and the log takes the date and strength of every load that follows; the log is the inventory at this scale.

Who buys this tank

Ferric, acid and caustic bulk storage at water and wastewater plants that cannot build a berm, dense process chemicals inside tall process buildings where the certification has to be on file, and any regulated liquid at plant scale at a site an inspector visits. One chemical per tank, labeled for both inspectors at once, manway closed against vapor loss.

What this tank is listed to hold

Each line is a liquid the resin is rated for, at the concentration shown, with the fitting and gasket to order. Follow the link for the full rating, or search the chemical compatibility database before ordering.

Delivery day

At 120 inches across and 199 inches long on the deck the 5670000N52 is oversize freight (NMFC 156600) on a flatbed at a lane rate; the freight cost estimator prices the lane to your ZIP; the figure listed here is before freight. A crane sets 5,300 pounds upright on the slab; a forklift unloads it; only a crane stands it. Water-test the primary, confirm the interstice stays dry through the hold, then drain and dry before the first chemical delivery, and keep the certification paperwork with the project file. Keep the delivery paperwork with the tank; the serial number on the shell is what a warranty claim starts from.
