8,700 gallons of chemical, with the containment built into the tank

The Snyder 1006400N45 is a double wall tank: a 142 inch diameter, 197 inch tall primary vessel of high density linear polyethylene sitting inside its own outer shell, so a leak in the inner tank is caught before it reaches the floor. It is rated for a specific gravity of 1.9, which puts sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and ferric chloride inside its envelope, and it is the white resin version of a four-tank family that differs only in resin grade and wall rating.

Two ways to buy. Add it to your cart above with freight quoted to your ZIP, or request a written quote for a job that needs paperwork.

Does your chemical belong in it?

Start with density. At 1.9 specific gravity the inner tank is molded to hold 137,860 pounds of contents; at water density the same 8,700 gallons weighs 72,558 pounds, so the rating buys you 65,302 pounds of headroom for the heavy acids and caustics. A chemical is only a fit if it is both compatible with linear polyethylene and no heavier than 1.9 times water: check the chemical compatibility database for the resin answer and the shipping documents for the density. The service limit is 120 F / 48 C; exothermic dilutions that push past that belong in a different material. The headspace wall thickness article explains why the vapor space above the liquid, not the wetted wall, is where oxidizer service fails first, and why a 1.9 rating is the right margin for it. The chemical list at the end of this page names the fitting and gasket material for each chemical; that pairing is not optional, because the wrong gasket fails long before the tank does.

Why a double wall instead of a berm

A single wall tank inside a concrete berm meets containment rules only as well as the berm is maintained. A double wall tank carries its containment with it: the outer shell is sized to hold the inner tank's contents, the interstitial space can be monitored, and the footprint is the tank's own 142 inches rather than a room. The SPCC 40 CFR 112 walkthrough maps the rule onto this design, and the 110 percent containment comparison shows where a poly double wall sits against a UL 142 steel tank. Freeboard is the number people miss: the freeboard sizing guide shows how much of the 8,700 gallons you can actually fill once thermal expansion and density are accounted for.

The 8,700 gallon family

The four 8,700 gallon parts share one mold. The 800 pound difference between the N45 and N46 shells is wall thickness, and wall thickness is the specific gravity rating; buy the heavier shell when the chemical is dense, not because it looks stouter. Going up to the 10,000 gallon tank costs 29 inches of height on the same 142 inch footprint, which is often the cheaper way to add volume when the pad is already poured.

Access, instrumentation and the fill line

  • 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the inner tank.
  • Fittings are specified at order to the chemical; bolted flanged fittings with the gasket named in the chemical list are the normal choice at this size.
  • 3 year warranty.

A tank this size wants a high-level alarm and an automatic cutoff on the fill line, because a delivery truck can put more into it than the freeboard allows before anyone notices. The spillover redundancy engineering guide lays out the layered safeguards, and the level gauge selection guide picks the sensor for a white poly double wall, where the outer shell complicates a through-wall reading.

Freight and foundation

A 142 inch diameter, 197 inch tall shell weighing 5,800 pounds is oversize freight (NMFC 156600), moved on a specialized flatbed with permits on some lanes; the freight cost estimator quotes it to your ZIP and the listed price is before freight. Plan the pad for the full 137,860 pound load using the concrete pad sizing guide, and confirm the gallons with the tank sizing calculator and tank sizing guide before ordering, because a tank this size is not returned. Unloading needs a crane or a forklift with the reach to clear 197 inches; plan the lift before the truck arrives.
