Sump tanks integrate an engineered low-point sump into the vessel bottom — a depressed catch basin that concentrates sediment, slurry, or pump-suction at a single low location. The sump is the difference between a tank that drains to 95% and a tank that drains to 100%. Critical for slurry pump NPSH (net positive suction head), sediment-laden water, and any process where dead-leg residue is a contamination or maintenance concern. Sump geometry is typically a recessed cone or dished depression with a centerline outlet discharging through the tank base. Three things to verify: (1) sump outlet diameter must match your downstream piping or pump suction (commonly 2", 3", or 4"); (2) sump depth determines how much NPSH the downstream pump has at minimum level — coordinate with your pump vendor; (3) base support must accommodate the sump protrusion — either a structural stand with a sump cutout or a recessed concrete pad.
