A 1,200 gallon green tank at 57 inches
The Snyder 32531 holds 1,200 gallons in green polyethylene, 86 inches across and 57 inches tall, 169 pounds empty. It sits in the low-profile part of the Snyder line, the tanks built for sites with headroom problems, and it is the lightest tank on the 86 inch floor. Green is the conventional color for a potable tank in the open, and the polyethylene blocks the light that grows algae in stored water. Rated for a specific gravity of 1.0, water only, with a 1-1/2 inch inlet, a 2 inch outlet and a 20 inch lid. At 169 pounds it is also the lightest 1,200 gallon tank Snyder makes, which matters on delivery day and matters again if the tank ever has to be moved.

The 20 inch lid
Most tanks in this class have an 18 inch manway. Twenty inches is enough to get shoulders through, which makes a cleanout, a float valve service or a sediment check a job done from the top of a 57 inch tank without tools. The lid is vented, and the vent must stay open: as a pump draws 1,200 gallons down, that vent is the only way air gets in.
The sizes either side
| Part | Gallons | Diameter x height | Empty weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1710100N45 | 1,100 | 86 x 55 in | 180 lb |
| 32531 (this tank) | 1,200 | 86 x 57 in | 169 lb |
| 1830400N52 | 1,300 | 72 x 87 in | 320 lb |
The 1,100 gallon 1710100N45 is 2 inches shorter and 11 pounds heavier on the same floor. The 1,300 gallon 1830400N52 is a different animal: a 72 inch footprint, 87 inches tall, and a 320 pound wall, which is a chemical-grade shell rather than a water tank. If you need 1,200 gallons of water in a low room, this is the tank; if you need a heavier wall, look at the 1,300.
Still deciding between these? Freight to your ZIP often settles it; the wider tanks ship differently. Or call 866-418-1777 and we will walk the table with you.
The base
Full, the tank weighs 10,008 pounds on an 86 inch circle. The wide floor spreads the load, but the base must be level and in contact with all of it; the concrete pad sizing guide gives the ACI 360R-10 method and the point where compacted base stops being enough. Service limit is 120 F / 48 C. A low tank warms and cools more evenly through a day than a tall one, because the water column is short and the wide roof sheds heat, which is easier on both the water and the resin over a summer.
Plumbing
- 1-1/2 inch inlet on top for a fill line or float valve.
- 2 inch outlet at the base: full-port valve first, then a union, then the pump.
- 20 inch vented lid for access.
Put the outlet valve where a hand can reach it without kneeling in the runoff, and give the pump a union so it comes off without draining the tank. A sight tube on the outlet is the simplest gauge on a low tank; the level gauge selection guide compares sensors for an automated system.
What 1,200 gallons is for
A household well reserve, a rainwater store beside a low building, stock water, and the smallest tank most rural fire plans will count, sized against NFPA 22 in the fire-water reservoir design guide. As a collection tank ahead of treatment it fits the layout in the industrial water reuse topology guide. Twelve hundred gallons is also a common nurse tank size on a flatbed, where the 57 inch height keeps the load inside the legal envelope without a permit. Check the capacity against your draw with the tank sizing calculator and the tank sizing guide.
Shipping
LTL freight, NMFC 156600-01, 169 pounds crated at 86 by 86 by 57 inches; the freight cost estimator quotes your ZIP and the listed price is before freight. At 169 pounds it is the easiest tank of its capacity to move by hand, and it rides upright in an enclosed trailer. Fill it in stages the first time, per the hydrostatic test methodology guide, and check the outlet fitting once the full head is on it. Set the tank on the pad before the outlet is plumbed; an 86 inch tank is awkward to shift with a valve hanging off it.
