Thirty-seven tons of chemical on the small pad

A 1.9 specific gravity wall is sized for a liquid nearly twice as dense as water, and 1,613 pounds of resin is what that takes on this shell, 413 pounds more than the 1.5 wall in the same mold. The N42 is the heavy cross-linked tank at this tank's weight for the densest oxidizers; the N43 is the 1.5 wall, 413 pounds lighter, for coagulants and brines that never approach this density, and the N40 and N46 the lighter cross-linked and linear grades. The 5480000N40 stands 4,900 gallons of cross-linked resin on a 90 inch base at 202 inches, and the 7000500N40 lays 4,600 down to 116 inches on a ten foot base.

Where the pipe goes

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 154 inches up; on acid or caustic the vent goes outdoors, the fill goes down a dip tube, and the vent is sized to the tanker pump.
• Outlet: name the chemical when ordering so the bulkhead fitting matches it; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab.
• Service limit: 120 F.

Read the level from the ground through a sender chosen for the chemical, not by climbing; leave the manway closed between fills to hold the vapor, and put the tank in shade if the chemical is light-sensitive. Regulated chemical in a single wall tank means a berm sized to the tank around it. Label it so the fire inspector and the workplace inspector read the same thing. Insulate or drain the outlet valve and the first run of pipe wherever the ground freezes.

Bringing in a load

A tanker's pump moves liquid faster than a manway vent can pass air, so either the vent is sized to the unload rate or the fill comes in through its own top bulkhead with a separate vent line. A fill pipe to the floor keeps caustic or coagulant from free-falling and foaming. A dense liquid heats when water is added to it, so a batch tank is filled with water before the chemical, never after. The first load into a new tank gets watched end to end, eyes on the slab edge and the outlet fitting while the level comes up, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength.

The work it does
