The heavy wall, laid low and certified

A 1.9 specific gravity wall is sized for a liquid nearly twice as dense as water, and 1,100 pounds of resin is what that takes on this wide, low shell, 200 pounds more than the certified 1.5 wall beside it. The N43 and N39 are the certified 1.5 and 1.35 walls in this same shell for coagulants, brines and water that never approach this density, 200 pounds lighter; the N29 and N32 are other grades. Where the pipe goes

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 91 inches up; on acid or caustic the vent goes outdoors, the fill goes down a dip tube, and the vent is sized to the tanker pump.
• Outlet: order the bulkhead fitting in the material the chemical calls for; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.
• Listing: ASTM certification.

Choose the level sender for the chemical; a low-level float switch keeps the pump from running dry, and the low shape keeps the suction flooded to the last few inches. Keep the manway closed against vapor loss, and shade the tank where the chemical is light-sensitive. Regulated chemical in a single wall tank means a berm sized to the tank around it. In a cold climate the outlet valve and the first run of pipe are insulated or drained.

Bringing in a load

A tanker unloads faster than the manway can breathe, so the vent is sized for the pump or the fill takes a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent. A fill pipe to the floor keeps caustic or coagulant from free-falling and foaming. A dense liquid heats when water is added to it, so a batch tank is filled with water before the chemical, never after. The first tanker into a new tank is a supervised job, slab edge and outlet fitting checked as it fills, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength.

A forklift with long forks or a small crane sets 1,100 pounds on the slab. Water-fill it once to the manway, hold it, then drain and dry before the chemical connection is made, and keep the certification paperwork with the project file.
