Concentrated sulfuric acid weighs nearly twice what water does and attacks the wall of an ordinary linear polyethylene tank from the inside, at the surface and in the vapor space above the liquid. Snyder's N30 resin is compounded for that service, so a tank in it is sized for the acid's weight and its chemistry together. The N45 is the general linear grade for caustic, coagulant and inhibitor, the N42 is cross-linked polyethylene for hypochlorite and the other oxidizers, and the N51 is another linear grade. The 1000112N30 is the sulfuric-grade 35, 5 inches shorter on a base 4 inches narrower, and the 5991002N48 is the 80 gallon step up in a linear grade.

Ports, overfill protection and the leak alarm

• Access: 14 inch threaded, vented lid on the primary; fill from a carboy through a funnel or a small pump, and vent to a scrubber or outdoors, never into the room.
• Outlet: through both walls together; specify an acid-rated bulkhead fitting and gasket when ordering, and a flexible acid-rated line to the pump suction.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

There are two levels to watch: the primary, with a sender rated for concentrated acid per the level gauge selection guide, and the interstitial space, which is the leak alarm and gets a float switch or a look each shift. Bracket the tank, mount the pump below the outlet so it primes by gravity, and keep the lid closed; acid draws water from the air and heats when it does. Never add water to the tank; dilution is done elsewhere, water first, and the eyewash is within reach of the lid.
