The N42 is the heavy cross-linked double wall at this tank's weight for the densest oxidizers, the N30 the sulfuric acid resin, and the N40 the lighter cross-linked grade. Fittings, alarms and the space between the walls

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 199 inches up; vent outside on acid and caustic service, a dip tube for the fill, and a vent big enough for a tanker's pump.
• Outlet: tell us the chemical when ordering and the bulkhead fitting is matched to it; on a double wall the outlet passes through both walls with a sealed transition, so it is set at the factory.
• Interstice: the space between the walls takes a leak sensor; fit one, wire it to an alarm, and test it with water at commissioning.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Choose the level sender for the chemical with the level gauge selection guide, read at ground level so nobody climbs for a number. A double wall tank protects against a wall failure, not an overfill: a high-level alarm and an automatic cutoff on the fill line are the layers that stop a tanker from topping it, and they are cheaper than the chemical they save. Full, the tank loads a 120 inch circle to 102,999 pounds at the rating: an engineered slab in full contact under the whole outer wall, with the empty tank strapped against wind at two heights and the manway reached from a fixed platform with a rail. Keep the manway closed against vapor loss, and shade the tank where the chemical is light-sensitive.

Fill day

Unloading a tanker pushes air out faster than a stock manway vent can pass it; size the vent for that rate, or fill through a dedicated top bulkhead vented separately. The fill pipe runs to the floor so caustic or coagulant does not free-fall and foam; on a shell this tall that is a long drop. If the tank is ever used to dilute a batch, water goes in first and the chemical second; the other order boils. The first delivery into a new tank is watched from start to finish, with the interstice sensor and the outlet transition checked as the level climbs, and the log takes the date and strength of every load that follows.

Put to use

Ferric and other dense coagulants at a plant that cannot build a berm, acid feed for pH control under a spill plan, heavy brine at plant scale, and any dense regulated chemical delivered by tanker where the containment has to be on the drawing rather than in the floor. Never two chemicals in one tank, and one label that satisfies both inspectors.

Truck, crane and the first hour
